Phu Quoc ranks among Travel + Leisure’s top luxury island destinations

Phu Quoc’s rise to global luxury fame continues as the island was recently named among Travel + Leisure’s Top 10 Best Islands in Asia-Pacific, securing third place and becoming Vietnam’s only representative in the prestigious 2025 Luxury Awards.

These awards, issued annually by Travel + Leisure – one of the world’s most respected travel magazines – highlight exceptional destinations across Asia-Pacific, a region experiencing the fastest tourism growth worldwide. Nominees must demonstrate excellence in service quality, resort and entertainment ecosystems, brand presence, and personalized guest experiences.

From emerging star to global luxury icon

Over the past two years, Phu Quoc has evolved from a rising star into a world-renowned luxury destination. While its breathtaking beaches – like Bai Kem and Bai Sao – have always attracted visitors with soft white sand and clear turquoise waters, the island now offers much more than natural beauty. It boasts diverse cultural and historical attractions, vibrant nightlife, and a range of accommodations from budget-friendly to ultra-luxury.

At the heart of this transformation is Sun Paradise Land, a resort and entertainment complex developed by Sun Group in southern Phu Quoc. The island has welcomed record-setting attractions such as the world’s longest three-cable cable car to Hon Thom Island, the celebrated Kiss Bridge (the world’s only non-touching bridge, featured by CNN), and the Guinness World Record-holding “Kiss of the Sea” multimedia show. Visitors also enjoy dazzling fireworks and bustling night markets, delivering a seamless day-to-night experience.

Between 2021 and 2023, Phu Quoc experienced a 15% increase in five-star accommodations. Following the launch of JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay in 2016, the island now hosts around 45 high-end resorts operated by global hospitality giants like Marriott, Hilton, Accor, and Rosewood.

According to Prof. Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Vietnam Institute of Economics, “Few destinations have consistently earned such prestigious awards. Phu Quoc’s progress confirms its capabilities and reflects Vietnam’s strategic vision to elevate the island’s international standing.”

Phu Quoc sets sights on ultra-luxury future

Winning awards is just the beginning. Phu Quoc aims to rival global icons like Hawaii and the Maldives. “With key projects underway, we may soon see the emergence of the ‘Hawaii of the East’,” said Mr. Hong Jung Min, CEO of Hanatour Vietnam.

Starting July 1, 2025, Phu Quoc will officially become a special economic zone under An Giang province, unlocking new policy incentives, administrative reforms, and streamlined project execution – paving the way for more rapid development.

In another major milestone, Phu Quoc will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum in 2027, becoming Vietnam’s third APEC host. Supporting this role, Phu Quoc International Airport is undergoing a $860 million USD expansion, which includes a dedicated VIP terminal for dignitaries and diplomatic events.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways will provide exclusive services for international guests, while the upgraded airport will seamlessly integrate with Sun Group’s hospitality and entertainment offerings, delivering a luxury experience rivaling Singapore.

Hon Thom Island is also set to host ultra-premium properties such as The Luxury Collection Hon Thom, Rixos Phu Quoc, and Ritz-Carlton Reserve Hon Thom – one of just seven Ritz-Carlton Reserve resorts worldwide.

Additionally, Aspira Tower, shaped like a sail and located on Hon Thom Island, is projected to become the world’s second sail-shaped landmark, set for completion by 2027.

These projects affirm Phu Quoc’s growing role as a luxury tourism and economic powerhouse. With continued strategic investment and visionary planning from Sun Group, Phu Quoc is fast becoming one of the world’s most desirable places to visit, live, and invest in.

Kuala Lumpur is the place that offers you the most experiences. There are chic shopping malls (like Pavilion KL and Suria KLCC). Moreover, a competitive cocktail scene and a sci-fi skyline can be seen in the Petronas Towers. It rises like twin rockets. Alternatively,  Menara KL glows like a futuristic lighthouse, where you can head to the 300m-high sky deck for an expansive view.
