Leaving Hanoi on dyke roads to avoid the heavy traffic and breaking out of the delta plains we pass through endless limestone karst scenery as we travel south through "Perfume Pagoda" country and extensive farming lands comprising a sea of paddy fields split by tree-lined roads. Striking northwest and over two passes, finally dropping down to the mountain valley settlement of Mai Chau. Here we stay overnight with friends of the White Thai minority in a traditional stilt house. In the evening, after feasting, we can enjoy a cultural show of Thai dancing and a range of special local liquors. *Overnight in Mai Chau.

Getting out of the Red River Delta, which brims with traditional farming activity, we pass through limestone monoliths and into foothills populated by Muong people. We head straight at the main range before breaching a high and beautiful forested pass, which descends into the hidden valley of Mai Chau

Early morning departure to Ba Be National Park, its a long way through villages and forest  before arriving Pac Ngoi - very typical of the Tay village on the side of Ba Be lake

Ride to Phu Yen on country road with a stop in Son Tay. On November 20-21, 1970, a joint force composed of USAF Special Operations and rescue personnel and U.S. Army Special Forces

You will bike along Red river bank to reach Son Tay town (50 km). Have lunch at Duong Lam ancient village. Take a walk in 40 minutes around the village

We drive southwest to Mai Chau, the gateway to the impressive mountainous area of northern Vietnam. The drive is very nice with stunning view of mountains, valleys, sugarcane farms and rice paddies

Morning transfer 4 hours from Hanoi to Thai Nguyen and up hill to Bac Kan, then transfer a bit more to Phu Thong where we start cycling off road 54 km to Ba Be national park

We pass through clusters of limestone as we head out north-east before leaving the main road and climb up to the peak of Mau Son mountain.
